“Through the Looking Glass” Developing a risk management IPC plan for your facility

Nigel McGothigan

Building on the themes of this classic novel by Lewis Carrol (1871), Nigel will take the audience through an adventure in reflective practice in developing a risk management plan for IPC leads in aged care in their individual facilities.

Developing a risk management plan requires a framework – In the novel, Chess becomes the framework for Alice, where she has little control over the trajectory of her life and is influenced by outside forces that help make choices. As IPCs, the Commonwealth and States provide our framework in conjunction with Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC). What are the right choices?

Developing a risk management plan requires a new language – in the novel, Alice’s use of the narrative and language (rhyme) has the capacity to anticipate and cause events to happen. As IPCs, what is your language? How can it help or hinder to build a plan in your facility?

Developing a risk management plan requires a dream fought often with loneliness – In the novel, Alice seeks compassion and understanding from individuals that she meets, but she is frequently disappointed. As IPCs we often feel lonely, let down and disappointed. How do you as an IPC keep the dream alive and remain accountable and responsible for animation of the IPC management plan?

Alice’s adventure in Through the Looking-Glass is a dream, dramatising her journey to adulthood. Our IPC portfolios are just beginning; we have the chance to reimagine, revision and create our future…
