In 2021 the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has seen an unprecedented amount of infection control activity in the aged care setting, not the least of which has been the necessity to provide a fast and efficient immunisation program to as many residents and staff as possible. In addition, regulatory directives required all staff entering and remaining on a residential aged care site to be vaccinated by September 2021. These imperatives presented a logistical and workforce challenge for a sector already struggling to meet the burdens and demands expected of them.

This presentation will outline the delivery of a COVID-19 Vaccination Program to both residents and staff in a multi-site not-for-profit Residential Aged Care setting in South Australia. The following topics will be covered:

  • Overview of the regulatory and compliance framework in relation to the COVID-19 Vaccination Program
  • Summary of the barriers and challenges encountered
  • Key elements of the COVID-19 Vaccination Program delivery
  • Outcome of the COVID-19 Vaccination Program
