In early 2017, the joint ASUM/ACIPC Guidelines for Reprocessing Ultrasound Transducers were published. As the first collaborative project between both organisations, written by experts in infection prevention and control, microbiologists and ultrasound clinicians, these guidelines created a wave of interest nationally and internationally. Although a majority of multidisciplinary ultrasound practitioners welcomed the guidelines, there has been much debate and less acceptance in the areas of emergency medicine and point of care ultrasound. Reasons for this will be discussed along with gaps within the current guidelines, and potential solutions for both organisations to implement. An overview of recent research relating to infection prevention in ultrasound will also be presented.
