Moving infection prevention and control beyond the hospital

Professor Patricia Stone

Infection prevention and control is a regional issue. One of the strongest predictors of a hospitalized patient having a multi-drug resistant organism infection or colonization is the setting from which the person was admitted from. Furthermore, increasingly patients are choosing to be cared for in their homes or residential care settings making them at risk for acquiring healthcare associated infections in the community.  For these reasons it is important for the hospital based infection preventionist to understand and support infection prevention and control in community settings. Community based infection and prevention evidence will be reviewed and strategies for supporting community based infection and prevention efforts will be discussed.
